GHL updated their ProfiLux power strips with the Powerbar 5.1. The most apparent difference is a more compact size. The previous generation was much larger, and some hobbyists complained about having to work with smaller spaces. It also includes a power button now, and retains a built in surge protector. Out of the 6 outlets, one is a dedicated always on “permanent” socket. There’s also a socket that can be used as a dimmer to perhaps control DC powered pumps or lighting. Total amperage rating for the Powerbar 5.1 is 15 amps. The dimmer socket is good for up to 2.5 amps, which is pretty significant. Each socket measures current and voltage, so that you can monitor electrical usage from their new updated software and web interface. Adding voltage does matter when you could have some small variances there, in terms of measuring electrical usage.
From our point of view, the new Powerbar 5.1 is much more attractive. The smaller space will make installing them in the confines of aquarium stands less of a hassle. The new Powerbars are expected to be available in August, much like the Doser 2.
