The Light & Motion Sidekick is a new accessory for GoPro cameras that is fully waterproof and submersible. There are many ways to add more lighting to your GoPro videos (and photos) but the Sidekick is the first accessory of its kind that sticks to the general form factor of the GoPro, and really doesn’t add much to the package. The small size of the Sidekick LED gives GoPro users much needed additional lighting even in the tightest of places.
The GoPro has become the action camera for a generation of active and creative uses the world over. We are using the GoPro quite a bit ourselves and have seen it used for countless aquarium applications. The new Sidekick LED light from Light & Motion could be especially great for shooting video of our aquariums from inside the walls of glass, especially in overly blue-lit tanks where additional white lighting can really help out bring out the full color of our aquariums.
What makes the Light & Motion Sidekick unique is that it is really designed to compliment the GoPro and while the LED lights is carries might be a little small for general diving use, they are perfect for the short distances we shoot in our aquariums. The Sidekick is available with a single LED floodlight for $130 and a Sidekick Duo has both a spotlight and a floodlight for $150.
Both models of the Sidekick have a run time of one hour at full brightness of 600 lumens for the base model and 800 lumens for the Sidekick Duo, two hours at medium brightness, and four hours on the low setting. We especially like the versatility of the Sidekick Duo with both types of lighting beams to either capture the scene, or focus on one coral or fish in particular.
The Sidekick for the GoPro can attach directly onto the base of the underwater housing and position on the side of the camera assembly. However there’s also a $30 adjustable sidearm mount for the Sidekick made of skinny Loc-Line fittings that allows a greater degree of flexibility for the light, positioning it just above the entire assembly.
