The JBJ Orion LT-120 LED fixture is the first new high powered light from JBJ in a really long time. It’s been a hot minute since JBJ has released any new LED fixture, making the Orion LT-120 the first new light announced by JBJ since the ho-hum Pacifica LED, and the still-impressive JBJ Unibody LED.
The Orion LT-120 LED will be offered by JBJ in only one size, that will be a hair of 20 inches long with different mounting options, and will be available in either a black or blue color option. The Orion LT-120 will be the first light from JBJ to offer onboard built-in LED controls and programming with two channels of light colors that can be operated in Pre-Set, Manual, or Custom modes.
The Orion is quite an exceptionally attractive LED light, breaking out from the generic form factor of basic rectangular LED ‘tablets’ with swooping curves and rounded corners. Of course, what truly makes this a light to watch is a particularly thoughtful choice of LEDs that really focuses the LED power in parts of the spectrum that matter.
Cree makes up the primary ingredients for the JBJ Orion LT-120 LEDs. There are Four white and four warm white LEDs to provide the nutritious PAR for this light, while Cree’s signature blue and royal blue LED colors are supplemented with the SemiLED Ultraviolet (UV) diodes. The selection and distribution of LEDs is probably the exact LEDs we’d select for this type of light where a balance of color and power are desired for a reef aquarium light.
With the Orion LT-120 JBJ is not getting involved in the war for ever increasing PAR values, with peak output between 200 and 300 umols at 18 inches of depth, ranging to a fairly even 100umols over an 18 by 36 inch footprint. JBJ is really aiming the Orion LT-120 to be a pragmatic light that will be powerful for most corals in medium size tanks, while not so strong that coral bleaching or unwanted algae will grow out of control.
The Orion marks a new direction for JBJ’s LED lighting catalog, of which the LT-120 will hopefully the first in a long line of much better LED lights from this established brand of marine aquarium products. The JBJ Orion LT-120 will retail for $350.00 and will be available towards end of October.
