Reef Ball Foundation – With more than 170 participating countries and over 1500 project submissions annually the Energy Globe Award is today’s most prestigious environmental prize worldwide. It distinguishes projects regionally, nationally and globally that conserve resources such as energy or utilize renewable or emission-free sources.
The aim of the Energy Globe is to raise global attention on sustainable, everywhere applicable environmental solutions and to motivate people to also become active in this area.
Ocean Ecosystem Preservation & Restoration – Reef Ball Foundation
The Reef Ball Foundation uses patented Reef Ball technology in various applications to help restore coral reefs with designed reefs, ground breaking coral transplant technology, fisheries, mangroves, estuary restoration, oyster reef restoration, living seawall shorelines, erosion control and expert collaboration on a variety of oceanic issues and educational projects in schools.
A “reef ball” is a designed artificial reef used to restore ailing coral reefs and marine habitats. The PH balanced concrete structures are made with an easy to use, portable fiberglass mold system. The concrete used to make reef balls contains micro silica, creating a super high strength and abrasion resistant concrete. They are also treated to create a rough surface texture in order to promote settling by marine organisms such as corals, algae, coralline algae and sponges.
In just over a decade, the Reef Ball Foundation has conducted over 5,000 projects and deployed over 500,000 reef balls and placed them in 59 countries. The projects have a global reach in 70+ countries. On average, each of these reef balls produces about 180 kilograms of bio-mass (animal or plant life) each year and reef balls have an expected life of at least 500 years. Therefore, 9 billion kilograms of biomass will be added to the world’s oceans over the next five centuries as a result of these efforts.
Congratulation Reef Ball Foundation!
