Somatic is a new line of aquarium products that launched at MACNA 2016 in San Diego. What’s cool about the new Somatic line is that it is made by Vertex Aquaristic, and therefore inherits many of the build quality and design features that made the brand so well loved.
Right out of the gate, the first thing that is striking about the Somatic Sump is its simple boxy shape, with a triangular wedge missing from one of its corners. This gap was designed to accomodate a stacking, triple dosing container. This space saving features will be especially useful to owners of small cube shaped tanks, and really tight aquarium stands where footprint space is at a premium.
The Somatic Skimmer is not quite as creative in its design, opting instead to pair up a decent needle wheel water pump fitted into the skimmer body itself. However the small footprint of the Somatic Skimmer is designed to preserve space inside the Somatic Sump, which itself will be compatible with some novel forthcoming accessories.
The real head-turner of the Somatic Sump and Protein Skimmer is the price tag, which will come in under $400 for both devices when they are bought together. This is a whole new level of value for two of the most important components of a modern reef aquarium filtration system.
We didn’t get word on how much the stacking dosing containers will cost, or when we could expect to see more of the other accessories. However with such a low price tag we’re sure to be hearing a lot more about Somatic aquarium products in the near future.
