The Red Sea Max Nano which we first saw several months ago has finally materialized into shipping in the European market, we’re told that North America will follow shortly thereafter in about 30 days.
The Max Nano is Red Sea’s smallest aquarium to date with just 75 liters (20 gallons) of total water volume. The reason for the small tank size? The rapid rise of nano reef tanks in the hobby and the need of customers wanting to have an all in one tank with less hassle.
The total display volume is only 62 liters (16.5 gallons) with the rest being reserved for the rear filter compartment. Red Sea is calling the rear filter compartment as a “rear sump”. Clever. The Max Nano uses high clarity 8mm ultra-glass along with a nifty auto top off unit and built in reservoir. The company says the reservoir will last for about three days of normal use. The Max Nano does not include a stand but rather customers can opt for the marine-spec cabinet in either white or black for an additional fee.
When releasing the aquarium Red Sea CEO Eli Nissenberg said: “We are very excited to introduce our MAX® NANO complete reef system which we believe will appeal both to freshwater enthusiasts trying their hand at marine for the first time and to experienced reefers looking for the ultimate small reef system capable of supporting even the most demanding corals”.
The Max Nano is paired with the new 55 watt Prime HD LED light from Aqua Illumination which attaches to the tank with Red Sea’s custom lighting mount. The 7 color channel LED is easily controllable by WiFi . The Max Nano should have an MSRP of around $699 in the United States without the cabinet, or $899 including the black cabinet. If you want the tank and white cabinet it will cost $925, a $26 premium over the black cabinet color.
The other comparable Red Sea product is the Reefer Nano which has a different design philosophy. The customer is in charge for the equipment selection with Red Sea providing an aquarium, tank and stand. As Red Sea matures their product offerings they offer a wide array of aquarium setups and sizes.
Our only complaint? The lack of lagoon sized aquariums. Full press release below:

Red Sea launches the MAX® NANO, fully featured 75 liter/20gal, Plug & Play reef system
The all new MAX® NANO features the very latest in reef-keeping technology including AI’s Prime HD LED lighting with integrated Wi-Fi control, REEF-SPEC® filtration and circulation systems, an Automatic Top-Off unit and an easy access power center.
NANO in name only, this 45cm/20” rimless, ultra-clear glass cube has all of the advanced REEF-SPEC® features that are the hallmark of the MAX® range of complete reef systems.
The complete filtration system is hidden in the rear sump that is topped by a rotatable screen for easy access. Fed by a unique surface skimmer that directs the water to a bespoke micron filter bag, the rear sump houses a silenced Reef-Spec protein skimmer, a 960lph/240gph European ECO circulation pump and 100g of REEF-SPEC® Carbon to keep the water crystal clear. The design of the rear sump together with the automatic top-off reservoir makes the MAX® NANO self-sufficient for about 3 days.
Lighting is provided with the all-new 55W Prime HD LED from AI. The full-spectrum, 7 color channel LED unit is fully controllable via Wi-Fi and is attached to the aquarium using Red Sea’s custom lighting mount, which can be rotated to provide full access to the aquarium for reefscaping and maintenance.
An optional stylish marine-spec cabinet that follows the same contour as the glass is available in black and white, giving the complete unit a contemporary look and feel.
