Tamsco USA was at the Aquatic Experience this past weekend in Chicago, and a few of their tools really got our attention. We’ve long been a fan of black oxidized steel for its durability and longevity, but for years Boston Aqua Farms has been the only company to offer a couple different coral cutters made from it.
Tamsco’s Deep Blue Aquarium Tools include a variety of different shears and coral cutters made from 420 Japanese steel which has been passivated and black oxidized for extreme durability to saltwater exposure. This type of steel also includes a high percentage of chromium to increase hardness and reduce corrosion.
We’ve collected dozens of ‘stainless’ steel aquarium tools over the years and very few of them show no sign of corrosion, but the black steel tools are among them. Two coral cutters we like from Tamsco’s Deep Blue series include a pair of long bladed snips, one which is heavy duty for getting around some really large coral branches, and another which tapers to a very fine point for precise cutting and trimming of the thinnest coral branches.
