Aquarium fish competitions have been a mainstay of the freshwater aquarium hobby for generations. A long culture of fish breeding as the culmination of being a good freshwater aquarist has resulted in many annual aquariums competitions throughout the year, all over the world.
With captive breeding having reached a certain degree of maturity in the marine aquarium world, we think it’s about time that saltwater fish breeders got with this program. We’ve been pining for this aspect of the aquarium hobby to jump to the saltwater side, and to whet your appetite here’s a sampler of what some champion freshwater fish look like.
In aquarium fish competitions, the aim is not to make the wildest or crazy colors and fins, although there are categories for this. But instead it’s more about having the healthiest, and best developed aquarium fish possible. It’s our hope that a saltwater aquarium fish competition would encourage breeders to develop the best wild type captive bred fish; it’s fun and exciting to develop never before seen strain, but breeding and raising the perfect natural fish is the ultimate challenge.
