The SmartFlow is a brand new flowmeter from AutoAqua which could streamline the process of knowing precise flow rates in your aquarium. This new device build upon this new trend that is rapidly gaining momentum in the reef aquarium hobby.
We’ve been tinkering with flowmeters for years, but until recently these had been of the analog kind which rely on a weight falling against the pressure of incoming water. This approach is great for spot measurements, but it is not practical for long term use due to biofouling and other complications.
Digital flow meters are a huge step up in precision and accuracy, and allow users to see precise flow rates at a glance. We’ve been using the PRS Corrente for several years and it’s helped us to really dial in flow rates through the tank to reduce noise, and flow through protein skimmers to maximize nutrient export.
Just last week Neptune Systems announced the release of the FMK kits which integrate with the Apex controller system, can monitor multiple flow meters, but also must be tethered to work at all. The forthcoming SmartFlow from AutoAqua looks like it will tear down the walls to getting serious flow monitoring, and email notification for low flow rate alerts.
All we’re seeing right now is that the SmartFlow will be able to monitor at least three flow rates simultaneously, but won’t require a complicated aquarium controller to operate. AutoAqua has excelled at creating new accessories that reefers could really want and need, and the SmartFlow promises to blow the doors off this new aspect of reefkeeping, and all the benefits that come with it.
