We knocked the dust off old Friday Smorgasbord and have rolled out a fresh edition featuring some interesting videos we’ve stumbled across this past week or so. In today’s installment we look at how we could tackle the plastic pollution in our ocean, we learn about the bleaching impact on the GBR, see wildlife being a bit wild and some cool things in the ocean. Enjoy!
Simulating the ocean cleanup
We’ve documents the ocean cleanup method from Boylan Slat, but could this ever really happen? This fantastic video shows a simulation of how this system could be deployed and how effective it could be. I say, give it a go!
How dead is the Great Barrier Reef?
This explainer video from Vox is a good option if you’re not into reading through the many articles and studies that are out there. The GBR has been hit with several coral bleaching events, but the latest is surely the worst. Why is this happening and what is the long term result? There is some good information in here about the basics of a coral reef that is helpful for beginners or people not bitten by the reefing bug.
YIKES!
People need to remember the *wild* in wildlife and how dangerous even the most peaceful looking creatures can be. This shocking video show a sea lion dragging a young girl into the water at the Steveston Fisherman’s Wharf, Richmond B.C. Canada. You can see tourists trying to entice the sea lion to come closer when this young girl sits down and turns her back to the sea lion before being pulled into the water. Thankfully people were there to react quickly and jump in to help the young girl.
