Chasing Coral is probably the first ever movie that is focused on real live corals, and not just the coral reef as an ecosystem. We already knew that Chasing Coral was going to be a Netflix exclusive feature but now we’ve got our first trailer of this exciting production.
As aquarists we have a very different and more intimate relationship with live corals than virtually any other people in the world, but it’s important to remember that corals aren’t doing so well in the wild. In fact, corals are doing very badly in the ocean, and the problems facing their habitat which we learned about growing up has only gotten worse. .
Alas, unlike the hole in the ozone layer there’s not one single cause that’s forcing corals to bleach out and die, and there’s no single fix. But for now we really need to leverage the incredible access to information, and our collective of unique coral knowledge as aquarists, to do our part to make more people care about the plight of our beloved corals.
Chasing Coral will have the potential to be a very powerful tool in educating the world about the extensive die off of corals all over the world. And as a community we need to use this movie as a tool for us to personally, individually, and collectively do a lot more to make the world a better place for wild corals. Chasing Coral will be on Netflix July 14th, and I’m sure we’ll have a lot to talk about when we all get to watch it. [Chasing Coral]
