Under the very curious watch of the American reef scene, nano and pico reef aquariums have blossomed into an art form all their own. Nowhere is the culture of nano reefing more evident than at Elite Reef in Arvada, Colorado.
This store has cultivated a following in the local scene for being extremely successful with their tiny tanks, and there’s up to a dozen floating around the store at any given time. At Elite Reef you’ll see several three gallon pico reefs, a handful of five to ten gallon tanks, and a smattering more All-In-Ones.
What’s cool about Elite Reef’s approach to these tanks is that they are definitely not formulaic – the nano and pico reefs are set up in a variety of ways, and house a wide variety of corals from tank to tank that it really is a gallery of nano reefing.
It’s such a strange occurrence to be visiting and documenting the store for the last time, because they are moving to a new and larger location. I’m really glad that these nano and pico reef tanks got the compilation video they deserve and I can’t wait to see what Elite Reef is up to for the 2.0 version of the store, opening hopefully later this summer.
