We’ve been watching Two Little Fishies AccuraSea 1 salt mix for a few years and when we dropped in the TLF booth at ReefAPalooza to catch up with Julian Sprung, he gave us a little update. Although its been a few years since it was first announced, it finally will have widespread availability in the market.
We asked Julian about jumping into the salt market when it seems like everyone under the sun has their form of salt, tweaked to specification they feel is proper. Julian went with a simple approach — develop a quality salt, that mixes up clean and quick and takes the guess work out of mixing it up.
As far as tweaking the mix for corals vs. fish, he decided on one formula that mimics sea water and isn’t out to doctor up the major or trace minerals to suit fuzzy sticks over our finned friends.
The packaging is innovative. It comes in two sizes, a 50 gallon box and a 200 gallon box. In the 50 gallon box, there are 10 bags of salt pre-measured to mix up 5 gallons. Likewise, the 200 gallon box features 10 bags measured to make 20 gallons each.
All you need to do is mark off your bucket or container, fill it with water and stir. No need to measure of weigh and the little bags ensure the salt doesn’t absorb moisture or have one component settle and throw off the balance.
So far, the reaction is pretty positive for the salt and we’re likely to start seeing it percolate through the distribution channel. Pricing should be in line with similar salts.
