Red Satrfish is a nascent Chinese aquairum brand that has been iterating on aquarium designs at a pretty rapid clip. Their newest RSN Plus cone protein skimmers is one of their first which is attempting to improve on the now-standard bubble diffuser plate.
Instead of having a basic bubble diffuser plate, each of the diffuser holes is fitted with a small cone that have a series of holes themselves. This multiplication of holes for the air-water mixture to rise into the body of the protein skimmer is intended to further reduce the turbulence inside the skimmer, also allowing for larger pumps to push more air and water through.
Two other small tricks the RSN Plus skimmers do have is a pipeless outlet design with a gate valve placed very low so it can operate in shallow water levels, and a sort of angled cross in the lid of the cup to encourage skimmate bubbles to pop. Other than that the Red Starfish RSNP Plus protein skimmer is a pretty typical skimmer design with a conical body, controllable DC needle wheel pump and design that can be completely disassembled for cleaning and maintenance.
Red Starfish is making the RSN Plus in three sizes – the RSN130 Plus which is 19 inches tall, drawing 600 liters of air per hour, the RSN170 Plus which is just under 21 inches tall and draws 900 lph and the largest in the line being the RSN230 Plus which is 24 inches tall and injects 1450 liters of air per hour. Pricing of these new slightly tweaked protein skimmer models will depend on your local aquarium market but being made in China, they should be priced competitively. [RedStarfish]
