Plastic Patch Cleanup Sets Sail Soon
Boylan Slat’s idea for a skimming device to remove plastic from the oceans is getting closer to reality. The project is set to test a crucial part of the design in the waters off Northern California towing a section of the device to see how it stands up to being towed through the ocean. If all goes well, the entire operation will make its first venture to the Pacific Garbage Patch in August.
There is Hope!
Recent news about massive coral loss on the Great Barrier Reef is disheartening, but this great video by marine biologist Kristen Marhaver give us hope.”Corals have always been playing the long game,” she says, “and now so are we.” Given time, stable temperatures and strong protection, corals have shown the ability to survive and recover from trauma. Marhaver reminds us why we need to keep working to protect the precious corals we have left.
Fun Ocean Facts
Here are some fun ocean facts you probably already knew, but are always worth revisiting.
UFO? WTF
If you want to cruise around the ocean in style, check out this spaceship-like Jet Capsule. Made in Italy, the Jet Capsule is definitely not your typical boat. There are a few design options, but this one is about 24 ft. long and 12 ft. wide and can be configured with a pilots seat, two passenger chairs and even a bathroom. It could easily serve as a platform for diving and lounging around the reef for a meager $150,000.
Another Wild Ride
If the Jet Capsule is just too plain for you, try the Innespace Seabreacher. These motorized watercraft can be designed to look like a sailfish or a shark and allow you to glide on top of or under the water.
