With yesterday’s announcement that Kyocera will be launching a new aquarium LED light this year, it reminded us of the other major electronics brand to dip its toes into the aquarium hobby, Philips. Designed for more commercial applications in mind, the CoralCare is certainly a unique approach to aquarium LED lighting and it looks like it won’t be long until we see a second version of this light.
Whether the new CoralCare will be a true second version or just an upgrade to its existing components remains to be seen. The simplest improvement we could see is a new suite of current generation LED chips inside – with improved efficiency and colors.
Since Philips launched the CoralCare LED fixture, their Lumileds subsidiary has since split off to become its own company. In that time Lumileds has really pushed forward with new LEDs targeting biological and horticultural applications with interesting Lime and Purple spectrum.
Furthermore, on the general illumination side of things Lumileds has pioneered the incorporation of quantum dots directly into the phosphors of white LEDs for better color, higher brightness and even greater longevity. It’s our hope that Philips will be bringing a combination of both of these advancements in the next version of the CoralCare LED aquarium light and we’ll be in Germany for InterZoo in a few weeks to bring you all the juicy details first.
