SUPA HUKA
What is it?
SUPA HUKA is the latest SSBA (Surface-Supplied Breathing Apparatus) designed for easy subsurface underwater exploration. The SUPA HUKA is a mix between snorkeling and scuba diving, allowing you to dive up to 10m deep.
This isn’t the first of its kind surface supplied air device, however, the SUPA HUKA really caught my attention with loads of functional and safety features. The SUPA HUKA is currently running as a Kickstarter campaign until the middle of August. This is one invention that has caught my attention and I would love to see it available for consumers.
SUPA HUKA floats on the surface of the water while you dive. Air is pulled in through the snorkel attachment to the internal battery powered air pump/compressor. The pump then pushes air down the air-line to the regulator, where you can breathe for extended periods of time.
The idea of surface supplied breathing is nothing new. Fishermen around the world use this technique, called Hookah diving, where a compressor on a small boat above supplies a constant flow of air to the diver. The SUPA HUKA is much safer than the artisanal fishing ways, however, the same safety and understanding of scuba diving applies to anyone breathing underwater.
The golden rule of diving in never hold your breath and it’s important when using a surface supplied breathing device such as this, to remember the golden rule! SUPA HUKA has some great safety features built into their product which previous iterations have not implemented including, additional air reserve, a surface supply battery indicator on the vest, and inflation mechanism in the vests shoulder straps.
Quite a few new kickstarter projects cross our desk, but it’s often the little thing that really makes a product stand out.
During use, you can store any personal items you want inside the water-tight case floating above. This might seem simple but if you are using SUPA HUKA in a remote area you could have a cell phone and GPS device inside for safety.
What I really love about SUPA HUKA is the solar panel. A full battery charge will last two hours, but solar charging allows you to recharge your device while taking a surface interval and relaxing on the beach. There is even a usb charging port and ever a camera port. This would be the perfect companion for off beaten path shallow reef exploration!
