We visit a lot of reef aquariums every year and every now and then, we come across hidden treasures like Evan Luo’s Lifted Reef aquascape. This 300 gallon aquarium is installed in-wall as a room divider meaning that there’s amazing corals to see on both sides!
The reef is dominated by SPS Corals and especially Acropora – so much so that Evan has taken to placing and even gluing corals on top of corals. There is also a good number of large polyp corals as well including many Euphyllia, lush elegance and Goniopora corals, and an absolutely gorgeous giant carpet anemone with deep blue long tentacles.
Every piece of this reef tank from the animals to the corals, the equipment and especially the aquascape are very inspiring and photogenic. No doubt the copious amount of light totaling some 1200+ watts of power contribute to the insane color and fast growth of the SPS corals absolutely covering the top half of the lifted reef.
The particular arrangement of the elevated aquascape creates a very dramatic presentation but it also allows for water to move without obstruction keeping the bottom free from detritus and the aquarium clean. One neat trick not discussed in the video is Evan’s use of a strong powerhead to also keep the sump well mixed and super clean.
If you want to learn more about how Evan achieved this simply stunning reefscape then you’ll enjoy this slightly longer video which goes in depth about many of Evan’s protocols for dosing, management etc. Evan’s reef is precisely the sort of hidden gems we hope to spotlight in the Reef Builder YouTube channel so if you want to see more like it, be sure and subscribe if you haven’t already.
