The Great White from Dalua Australia is a curious protein skimmer with a curious combination of features. This pipeless skimmer set to debut at ReefStock Australia was designed in Australia, made in Taiwan, and uses a high quality Italian needle wheel pump to do its job.
At first glance the conical upper half of the body and long tapering neck are well in line for a space saving protein skimmer like the Great White. But upon closer examination, the Great White has a very unusual bubble diffuser plate with exit holes pointed outwards towards the skimmer body.
This peculiar bubble outlet design has the benefit of ensuring that an equal outflow exits from each hole, and it lowers the height of foam injection into the skimmer body for increased contact time. Most of the other features including the downard facing outlet, air silencer and quick release cup are fairly standard issue, but it’s the pump at the heart of the Great White skimmer which will make it a great performer.
Like the Nyos line of protein skimmers, the Great White from Dalua uses the very quiet and efficient Eden pump from Italy to create the air-water mixture. Of course the pump is only half of the equation so the design of the needle wheel used in Dalua’s new skimmer will ultimately determine how well this skimmer generates copious amounts of air and the bubble size.
We expect to get our first good look at the new Great White from Dalua Australia at ReefStock Australia but they’ll be in America just a few short weeks later for MACNA in Las Vegas.
