Automatic filter rolls have been a long time coming in the reef aquarium hobby. Starting out as large microwave size contraptions for ponds, the concept and the principles have been miniaturized and shrunk smaller every year.
The best parts of an auto filter roll – small size, affordable price, ease of use and good performance – have all been distilled into the second generation Clarisea. Since we’ve been following the tech for nearly a decade we decided it would be more engaging to enlist fellow reefer and first time filter roll user Evan Montgomery to try out one of the new Clarisea Gen2 units on his reef tank.
Like any inherently new device getting a feel for putting it together and installing it in a typical reef sump is a small hurdle. But once the filter roll is installed and it begins to do its thing the resulting nutrient export, noise quieting and crystal clear water is well worth the effort. Be sure to watch the entire video as Evan discovered a really cool added benefit of using the Clarisea Gen2 specifically to lower and remove phosphates.
