The Prodigy overflow box is a new water transportation device from Eshopps that aims to its job with the smallest possible footprint and profile. Coming in two sizes, the Eshopps Prodigy overflow box can handle up to 700 gallons per hour for the Prodigy Medium, or 900 gallons per hour in the Prodigy Large.
What makes the Eshopps Prodigy overflow box remarkable is that it’s almost completely made up of the external portion of the assembly. The internal portion of the Prodigy, the parts that go inside the tank including the weir and prefilter are practically nonexisten at barely 5/8ths of an inch thick!
At $159 for the medium and $179 for the large, these are not ‘economy’ overflow boxes but for that price you actually get more than one might expect from a more basic kit. All plumbing parts including three bulkheads are included, and one surprising addition is the inclusion of a glass hole saw.
Drilling the glass wall of an aquarium can be stressful for the uninitiated but the hole saw is the exact size required to transfer water from the internal prefilter to the external weir and drain portion of the Prodigy, and a jig is included to keep the hole saw where you want it while you begin the drilling/cutting process. Make sure to check the thickness of your tank glass because the the Eshopps Prodigy overflow is only suitable for wall thicknesses up to 5/8 of an inch thick or 15 mm.
Other flourishes include a tight fitting lid to reduce noise, evaporation and splashing, curved side walls which looks nice and is easier to wipe down, and it’s just an overall great looking option for getting your tank plumbed for a filter underneath the tank. [Eshopps]
