The Deltec VF8000 is a new model of automatic filter roll that is not only rated for a higher capacity, but also seems to introduce some much appreciated refinements to make it work better than ever. The Deltec VF fleece filter series of Automatic Roll Filters have been our favorites for larger tank volumes and we’re excited to learn that a new larger model is coming down the pipe.
As their model numbers communicate, the VF4000 is rated for 4,000 liters or just over 1,000 gallons per hour, the VF6000 is rated for 6,000 liters or 1585 gallons per hour, so we can safely assume the VF8000 will pass through over 2,000 gallons every hour. We don’t yet know how much the Deltec VF8000 will cost or when it will be widely available, but thanks to a recently shared introductory video we have a good idea of all the new features that should keep it one of the best in this size range.
As we’ve previously discussed at length, if you want to get the most water through any automatic roll filter is to elevate them out of the sump so that gravity can help to pull water through faster and the new VF8000 now has an integrated hang-on bracket to make this optimized installation much easier. The water inlet feeding into the chamber with the actual filter material now has an included diffuser to reduce any kind of splashing noise and to evenly distribute water throughout the chamber.
One of our favorite new improvements to Deltec’s VF ‘Vleece’ Filter is the use of roll ‘guides’ on the fleece retainer bar, and a longer handle with a crossbar that helps to keep the filter paper flat and in place. Deltec’s automatic roll filters are already some of the easiest to change but this longer handle on the retaining bar makes it even easier to replace the filter material without having to get your hands deep into the filter chamber.
One interesting feature of the VF8000 is that it will use the same replacement filter rolls as the VF6000 so presumably it might be a little taller in order to have a larger filtration area to allow the more than 2,000 GPH flow rate. Another interesting change to the Deltec VF8000 is that the whole assembly is now enclosed and has a dedicated outlet which might help route water through your sump or direct it to a secondary chamber for additional filtration or better yet, a recirculating style protein skimmer.
We’ve thoroughly enjoyed using the VF6000 on our 600 gallon system but have really been pushing it to the edge of how much water it can handle, so we are really looking forward to this new Deltec VF8000 model with higher capacity and some welcome improvements.
