Purple Non-Sulfur (PNS) Bacteria is one of the newest breakout hits for microbial remediation as well as feeding your reef with an all natural source of bacterio-plankton. Produced by Hydrospace in Boulder, Colorado the unique red reef sauce has been popping up at reef aquarium stores around the country and now the startup company is inviting users to grow their own.
The PNS Homegro is a new kit which includes everything you need to get started culturing anyone of the purple non-sulfur bacteria from Hydrospace including ProBio, YelloSno or Substrate Sauce, each with their unique attributes when added to a live saltwater aquarium environment. The PNS Homegro kit includes one collapsable 2.5 gallon jug with a spigot, a bottle of innoculation and one pre-measured pouch of culture medium mix which is individually measured per package to ensure uniformity of nutrients.
The setup of the PNS Homegro is very simple and following proper sanitation/biosecurity practices and 30 days of exposure to moderate lighting you’ll be rewarded with 2.5 gallons of home made purple non-sulfur bacteria, enough to treat up to 8,000 gallons of aquarium volume. The kit itself is not exactly cheap at $140 (w/ free shipping) but you’ll end up with two and a half gallons of delicious PNS bacteria at around 20% of the price of retail bottles found in stores.
