The Red Sea Sump Modification kit is a very useful accessory for removing glass partitions that are siliconed together. Consisting of not much more than a box cutter with a very thin metal ‘blade’, the Sump-Mod tool is intended primarily for making room for Red Sea’s ReefMat automatic filter roll.
Despite not being sharp at all the Sump Mod tool is extremely flexible making it the perfect tool for modifying parts of glass sumps which are held by silicone glue. We haven’t had to modify that many glass sump partitions or baffles but there certainly was a lot of incremental cutting involved using a typical box-cutter, making the job both stressful and tedious.
We recently cut out some partitions in two different sumps to make way for Red Sea ReefMats of different models and we had the Sump Mod tool for one but not the other, and boy the experience was night and day. Although it has no sharp edge the Sump Mod tool cuts through thin joints of silicone like absolute butter – it works so well we’re astonished that we never had a tool like this before and ReefMat aside, we’ll never cut out siliconed glass without it!
