Prodibio has announced new calcium and buffer additives which are similar to a two-part solution but which are packaged in vials. After years of dosing either a liquid or powdered calcium or buffer additive, it is refreshing to see some innovation in this stale domain of reef aquarium maintenance. Alka-Reef+and Calci-Reef+ vials are dosed for 50 gallons of water in a 2:1 ratio to raise calcium by ~20ppm and alkalinity by 1.2 dKH. Calci-Reef+ also contains an complimentary amount of magnesium as well as “progressively-liberated” bicarbonate.  For a reef of 50 gallons or more, adding this two-part will be a breeze.  If you have a smaller aquarium you may have to wait until the ‘nano’ iteration of this product is released, as Prodibio has done for nearly all of their other additives. If you have a much larger tank, you should probably stick to reactors or the bulk dry additives. Although this product will not be available stateside until later this year (read December at the earliest), we aquired each of these products and we will be reporting back on our experiences dosing them on a 50 gallon mixed-reef cube tank.
