If you were an early adopter of the original AquaIllumination LED aquarium light, you may have been wondering when AI would give it’s earliest customers the Cree XP LED makeover. The future availability of an upgrade kit was announced early in the news of the second generation AI LED and as of today, AquaIllumination is officially offering an upgrade kit for gen one AI LED owners which includes all of the components visible in the image above. For $250 gen one AI LED owners will get eight XP-loaded LED pucks (1 blue : 2 whites per), eight triple lenses, the new AI LED driver board and a new power supply. The overall fixture will now consume 20 watts less than the old configuration and the power supply has a ten foot power cord so you can get some distance between the PS and your shiny upgraded AI LED light. If $250 sounds really cheap for all of those components it’s because the price of the upgrade is basically a “core charge”. Whether you have the upgrade sent to you or you send your gen one AI LED light to C2 dev, all the previous components will be retained by C2 and they’ll be checking serial numbers so DIYers can’t get any bright ideas. For more information visit the AquaIllumination website.
