Reef on the Rocks is offering you the benefits of aragonite-based DIY reef rock without the hassle of mixing the ingredients, forming and curing the rock and of course – having to clean up the mess. Made from white cement, perlite and aragonite sand, Reef on the Rocks is offering possibly the only pre-fabricated dry aragonite rocks on the market.
Reef on the Rocks has a couple of neat things besides just being able to use these rocks right off the bat (with a slight initial pH spike lasting a few days). The rocks consist of about 70% aragonite by weight so there is plenty of buffering ability plus the addition of the perlite adds more structure and an extremely porous ingredient that will aid in establishing a biological filter.
Looking for some help in aquascaping? Reef on the Rocks has some new predrilled packages in column or arch forms anchored together with rugged and corrosion-proof fiberglass rods. Another neat feature is built in aragonite rock frag plugs that blend in perfectly with the environment. If you’re a handy reefer these rocks can be drilled easily when dry and a bit harder once they are wet. You can also order additional fiberglass studs to lock your creation in place.
Retailing around $2.50 per pound to start, this is significantly cheaper than cured or uncured live rock without having to mine or harvest the rock. Sure you don’t get the biological diversity of live rock but its a clean slate with no parasites or unwanted hitchhikers to worry about and cause you headaches down the road. With the advancement of the hobby and good husbandry practices, going with a dry base rock makes a lot of sense taking a lot of headaches out of the process. We’re glad to see products like this and other similar ceramic live rock alternatives coming on the market.
