We always hate to see theft within our own community and it looks like another dubious coral thief hit a local fish store snagging around $4,000 worth of coral from Marine Aquatics, a local fish store in Midvale, Utah. When we first saw the link and noticed the timestamp on the surveillance footage for April 1, we were hoping it was some sort of April Fools prank but sadly there is no joke here — owner Jerry Ohrn even had his story hit the evening news.
The thief was caught on video snagging a few rather large colonies out of the display tank right next to the front door. After grabbing corals that included Rommel’s Watermelon acropora colony, a large 6-7 in. Flame Thrower chalice, a bright teal staghorn colony and a few more, the thief left and placed the corals in a bucket he left outside the front door before making his escape.
If you happen to know anything or see someone suspiciously trying to pawn off these colonies or large amounts of these frags please contact Ohrn or the Midvale police department. While Ohrn is offering a financial reward for information leading to the capture of the thief, reefing karma is a much more valuable reward for doing the right thing. Thanks for the heads up on this story Reggie.
