We’ve posted so many aberrantly colored fishes here on ReefBuilders that it has become part of the norm to expect something weird and off-colored to pop up every now and then. Yet it never gets old and each fish lucky enough to be touched by the artistic designer that is mother nature seldom fail to impress. The almost full black Holacanthus tricolor angelfish pictured above is no exception. The super impressive looking fish was sent to Japan more than a month ago but its the first time we’re seeing this photo.
The ‘veil wearing’ angelfish has the black portion of its body creep up all the way to the face, leaving almost no yellow behind, except for the little sliver down at the ventral region. Unfortunately, as with many Rock Beauty angelfish, this individual failed to eat and adapt to captive life and perished soon after. It’s a shame that the photo isn’t of the best quality, and we’re pretty sure the fish looked even better in person. A big thanks to Tetsuo Otake for sharing the photo with us.
