MakersLED is a new company started up to give DIY LED reefers a little more fit and finish to diodes they assemble for their reef tank lighting. We really love the idea of DIY LEDs being available to the masses as easy to assemble kits that anyone can get started with. However, although the light quality of DIY assembled LEDs can be on par with a real LED fixture, the look of the end product with usually a slab of aluminum, a bunch of visible LEDs and wires going all over the place is less than sexy.
This is where MakersLED comes in with a more standardized platform for mounting LEDs into T-slots built into their heatsink, and being able to receive all manner of performance enhancing features like splashguards, standard fan, potentiometers and so on. In reality the MakersLED DIY kits will be more versatile assemblies that make it easier to get a more finished look from a home-assembled product, and once it laucnhes and pricing revealed we’ll have a better idea of whether this kit will really be more desirable as an LED lighting option for reef tanks that creates a middle ground between DIY and mass-produced LED aquarium lights.
