This piebald purple tang is probably the worst picture quality we’re willing to post, but we’re using it anyway since the piebald purple tang subject matter is so extraordinary. As Yikai was quick to point, this is NOT a purple purple tang but instead a weird Zebrasoma xanthurus which looks like it’s been afflicted with a severe case of vitiligo. As far as unusual Zebrasoma go, this tricolor piebald purple tang is on the same level as the tricolor scopas tang from Southwest Marines in the UK.
Unlike the all white yellow tangs, this purple tang has tricolor big patches of white with splotches of yellow all bordered by the same royal purple skin of a purple tang. It is uncertain where this picture was made, we’ve heard of a specimen like it living at a retail store in England but other than that, this piebald purple tang just goes to show that there is no end to the weird color aberrations we can expect to see in the fish genus Zebrasoma.
