We are constantly awestruck with the amount of new species of reef fish being discovered recently and yesterday a new Grammatonotus sp. was uncovered by the California Academy of Sciences dive team exploring the reefs surrounding the Philippines. After already collecting some rare species, it looks like Rich Pyle, Brian Greene, Bart Shepherd and Luiz Rocha hit the holy grail by uncovering yet another new species.
Yesterday one of these fish was collected but did not survive the decompression. Today, the team collected three more specimens this time from 487ft. (147m) near Anilao, Batangas, Philippines. While we don’t have too much detail at this point, we are hoping to hear more about this species and this expedition very soon.
