Halcyon Marine Reef Salt is a new seawater salt mix from Continuum Aquatics which prides itself on being as clean and pure as economically possible. The basic ingredients of Halcyon Marine Reef salt are never constituted from evaporated seawater and use instead only reagent, pharmaceutical, tested and assayed ingredients to create a seawater formula which is very clean and free from impurities.
Better yet, you may have noticed that Continuum’s Halcyon Salt carries the “Marine Reef” moniker to convey that instead of creating a mineral poor formula for fish tanks and an “enriched” formula for reef tanks, the Halcyon mix is designed to mix up to natural seawater levels. The concentration of calcium, magnesium and alkalinity with all major and minor elements are found in balanced and proportional levels comparable to what our aquarium animals might encounter on the reef.
While other salt mixes might try to pitch their formula as being more desirable for having elevated levels of calcium, magnesium and alkalinity, a feature which increases mixing time and precipitation, Continuum Marine Reef Salt mixes up to a salinity of 36 ppt, with a specific gravity of 1.026, an alkalinity of 7.5 dKH, 415 ppm of calcium and 1290ppm of magnesium, precisely as you’d expect from a sample of saltwater from the ocean. Being reef aquarists we have access to plenty of calcium, buffer and magnesium to raise those levels if the aquarists feels compelled to and it’s about time that a company start providing a more “accurate” seawater aquarium salt mix.
Continuum Aquatics is making the Halcyon Salt available in the standard issue 50 gallon bag and 200 gallon bucket and while premium quality ingredients are used to make it, we expect that Halcyon Salt will be competitively priced when it goes on sale. [Continuum]
