Red Sea made quite a splash this week when it was revealed that they have a new line of REEFER aquariums in the work which address a completely new niche in the aquarium hobby and market. The Red Sea Reefer series are a high end approach to offering reefers a high quality, pre-drilled aquarium, with a modern cabinet and a versatile sump – the three components together form the foundation of a great reef aquarium system that users are then encouraged to accessorize and equip with their pumps, lights and filtration devices of choices.
We’ve already had the good fortune to divulge all or most of the technical specifications of Red Sea’s new Reefer series tank, stand and sump systems and today we’re following up with more information on their pricing and expected availability date. As we’ve mentioned, the Red Sea Reefer series will come in five sizes, and two choice of stand colors with all other features being the same. One thing to note about the literature for the Reefer tanks is that the naming convention refers to the total system volume including the tank, overflow and sump, and not just the size of the aquarium display.
The smallest tank in the Reefer line is the Reefer Nano which is 18″/45cm long, contains 117 liters, 31 gallons of volume and will cost $699 for the kit with the black stand, and $749 for the white stand color choice. Next up in size is the Reefer 170 which is 24.5″/60cm long, contains 175 liters, or 46 gallons, and it will carry a $150 premium over the nano with the kits costing $849 and $899 for the black and the white stand options respectively.
The middle child in the Red Sea Reefer series is the Reefer 250 which is 35.5″/60cm long, contains 243 liters, about 64 gallons and its expected pricing is aiming for $1175 for the black stand and $1275 for the white one. The two largest tanks in the Reefer line are the showiest in the family and beginning to tread into large aquarium territory.
The Reefer 350 is a 47″/120cm long display tank with 328 liters, or 87 gallons and it will be priced at $1475 for the black stand, and $1575 for the white. Finally, the largest kit in the Red Sea Reefer line is the 450 which is 59″/150cm long with a total system volume of 410 liters, 108 gallons and it will round out the top end with a price of $2049 for the black stand and $2149 for the white stand option.
We aren’t quite sure why the white stands for the Reefer series cost a premium over their black counterparts, perhaps because Red Sea expects to make the black stands in greater numbers but if we had to choose, we’d totally got for the white stands anyway. Keep in mind that these are all estimated retail pricing for the Reefer series of aquarium kits and as are subject to show a little variability in different parts of the market. Red Sea expects to be able to begin shipping their new conception early next year, hopefully in the late February time frame.
