MaxSpect has formally announced two new accessories for the Gyre FX130 pump, the cap and the new 4-bladed “rugged” propeller. The cap for the MaxSpect Gyre FX130 is as basic as an accessory gets, allowing users to remove one propeller side to turn the relatively long water moving device into a much more manageable seven inch long “mini” gyre pump.
We admit that we’ve already tested both the FX130 and FX150 MaxSpect Gyre pumps with only one propeller running and without the cap, but we don’t advise it as this is not recommended by the manufacturer. In this configuration the entire pump can be run as normal, with all modes except for Alternating Gyre mode as only one propeller is present to do the work.
Meanwhile the real action of this announcement is the new 4-blade rotor which is called the “rugged” propeller by MaxSpect. The current rotors for the MaxSpect Gyre pumps are assembled from multiple pieces and consist of eight, relatively thin blades. This makes them susceptible to damage from errant “pieces of the reef” that may make their way through them.
The blades of the new rugged MaxSpect Gyre pump propeller are larger and sturdier, and molded in a single pieces to greatly increase strength. Being molded and having a new, larger 4-blade design makes it much easier to clean, and the ends of the propeller are now clearly labelled so users know which side of the motor to install them on.
As we mentioned during our coverage of this accessory during AquaRama, the new beefier rugged gyre pump propeller are expected to be a very affordable upgrade and they will be included standard with future assemblies of the MaxSpect Gyre FX130 pump, and both the cap and the new propeller are expected to be available in the Fall.
