The DOC Skimmer 9410 and 9430 are Tunze’s two largest models of DC controllable protein skimmers and last weekend at ReefStock we got to see these two new devices in person. We are reefing during a time when most protein skimmers are made with a cookie-cutter design so it’s quite refreshing to see Tunze making their DOC skimmers with a different design, different materials, and most importantly, their own pumps.
And why shouldn’t they? While Tunze is best known in the hobby for their water pumps, Osmolator ATO and other devices, Tunze is actually the oldest protein skimmer manufacturer in the aquarium hobby today. Tunze’s protein skimmer roots stretch back over fifty years, a fact they were keen to remind us about when they displayed a working Turbelle Skimmer from 1963 at InterZoo.
Tunze’s two newest skimmers, the DOC Skimmer 9410 DC and 9430 DC bring with them the latest controllable Hydrofoamer pumps for maximum performance and efficiency. Protein skimmer connoisseurs will notice that the Hydrofoamer has the same external appearance as the workhorse Sicce PSK needle wheel pump, but inside the coils, impeller and needle wheel designs are all custom-made by Tunze.
The Tunze 9410 DC and 9430 DC also sport a unique outflow system with a molded plastic base that completely envelops the bottom of the skimmer. We have yet to see these two skimmer in action but we’ll hopefully be putting at least one of these through its paces sometime in the near future, and it’ll be interesting to see how differently they are tuned and adjusted compared to the most commonly used protein skimmers today.
