Biopod is a new company out of Canada which is taking some inspiration from the diverse number of all in one aquarium available for both and freshwater aquarium systems. We know that this is a reef aquarium blog but every reefer we spoke with at InterZoo was nearly blown away by the striking look and suite of features of the Biopod microhabitats.
These sleek self-contained ecosystems can replicate a variety of different terrestrial and amphibious ecosystems through a whole suite of intelligent and app-controlled features. The ‘smart’ part of the Biopod Microhabitats is that they feature built in sensors for humidity, ground temperature and air temperature.
Through the included controllable LEDs, spray nozzles and built in ground heaters, you can actually dial in the environment yourself. Or if you are a relative newcomer to these kinds of emersed planted setups and vivariums, you can actually tell the app what kind of amphibians, reptiles or plants you are trying to keep, and it will select one of a number of presets.
The Biopod Microhabitats look like they would be very expensive but in fact they are quite affordable. The smallest BioPod One is expected to retail for a measly $300, the cost of one decent coral colony or one hyped up coral frag, and it includes all the hardware you would need to get started with something dramatically different from a reef tank.
Other models of Biopods are larger and some even include a flooded aquarium section so you can combine both freshwater fish & plants as well as the fully emersed part of the enclosures. Some other neat features of the Biopods is included HD Camera, presumably to take pics or videos of the setup from inside, as well as UVB & UVA lighting from the LEDs which is beneficial for both the plants and the terrestrial animals therein.
