Orphek will be launching a new line of LED striplights. The Orphek OR lights, which translates to “light” in Hebrew, will come in three lengths — at 60, 90 and 120 cm. Each light is names for the length, so the Orphek OR 60 is 60cm, Orphek OR 90 is 90cm and the Orphek OR 120 is 120 cm. We updated this article with information comparing this light to the Orphek Slim Line LEDs.
Based off a design they created for public aquariums and the professional industry, the Orphek striplights are a good way to add accent lighting to existing systems or to group together for primary lighting and are made to be hung using a stainless steel hanging kit. One thing we didn’t notice was a mounting strip or bracket to band a few of these together as hanging a bunch of strips by cables isn’t a great option.
There are five different LED configurations and three lens options (60, 90 or 120 degrees) for planted aquariums all the way to reef actinic lighting. The three lights most intriguing for reefing applications are probably the Reef Daylight that mixes 12,000K white, deep red (660nm), yellow (590nm), cyan (490nm), royal blue (460nm), blue (430nm), and violet (410nm). The Reef Blue Sky (blend of royal blue and cyan) and Reef Violet (blend of blue and violet) are the other two big ones for reefers. If you wanted to add more of a “grow light” look to offset the smurf colors, the Grow Light strip will hit you with daylight (6300K), far red (730nm), deep red (660nm) and yellow (590nm), along with cyan, blue and violet LEDs.
Each light features a fanless IP65-rated driver, power cord with switch and stainless steel hanging kits. The Orphek OR 60 is rated at 54W output and will retail for $120, the Orphek OR 90 is rated at 72W output and retails for $140 and the Orphek OR 120 is rated at 120W output and will run you $160, but all three feature free shipping with the cost.
Update: Comparing these to their older Slim Line LED, these have more options in length (up to 48 in.) where the Slim Line stopped at 24 in. They also have a bit of a smaller footprint and more power. If you look at the Orphek OR 60, there are 18 3W LEDs vs. the 13 LEDs in the Slim Line. According to Orphek the new Orphek OR striplight has more power, is a slimmer profile, is waterproof and costs less. For illustration, the Slim Line LED retails around $300 and the OR 60 retails for $120.
