The Reefer Skimmers is the new name for the foam fractionators formerly known as ReefClean and debuted at InterZoo by Red Sea earlier this summer. While the name has changed, the rest of these skimmers has remained mostly the same from what we saw back in Germany.
The Red Sea Reefer Skimmer is a classic cone-shaped protein remover with an internal Sicce needle wheel pump, bubble diffuser plate, air silencer and all the bells and whistles you’d expect to see on a new brand name release. But there’s at least two novel features which are unique to the Reefer Skimmer, the Foamview window in the cup and an integrated manual neck cleaner.
The Foamview window is a special section of the cup where the outside of the cup reveals the foam riser neck so you can have a better and longer view at the air-water interface and the production of foam at this junction. The integrated neck cleaner is a very simple accessory that we’ve seen available as an automated option for decades but for some reason is very very rare as a manual, hand cranked component.
The neck cleaner is hard to see in pictures because it is clear as the skimmer body save for the squeegee bladed edge – but the manual neck cleaner is connected to a swiveling part of the lid of the cup and each twist wipes down the skimmate from the neck so that -theoretically – rising foam can then remove it from the entire skimmer.
Unfortunately, the imminent availability of the Reefer Skimmer comes at the cost of the other exciting devices that Red Sea teased at InterZoo including their LED light the ReefLED, water flow pump the ReefWave, and dosing pump the ReefDose. However Red Sea has put more than enough touches on the Reefer Skimmer to help distinguish their take on this pretty classic skimmer design and assembly and we look forward to trying one out before year’s end
