It’s taken almost two years but freshwater aquarists can now finally get the groundbreaking and highly refined Radion LED light in a light with a classic freshwater spectrum. Costing as much as their marine focused counterparts, the $460 Radion G5 XR15 FW and $890 Radion G5 XR30 FW have all the same benefits and high tech features we come to expect from our reef centric Radions with a different suite of diodes to produce that warm, colorful spectrum most suited to planted tanks.
Technically speaking the only real hardware difference is just a touch fewer LEDs with 46 in the Radion G5 XR15 FW and 92 diodes in the Radion G5 XR30 FW but with the same innovative dual colored moonlights riding their own low power control channel. The large continuous cluster of LEDs are fine tuned for producing up to 90 watts of power in the XR15 FW and 180 watts of power in the XR30 FW and they are all supported by the second generation of hemispherical edge illumination for perfect color blending and very wide, uniform light spread.
The combination of cool white, warm white, photo red, green, lime and blue LED colors riding six control channels combine to generate a very warm color spectrum which is optimized for freshwater plant growth but could perform just as well over a marine planted aquarium, macroalgae scrubber, or even mixed in with with Radion Pros and Blues for the more adventurous shallow water reef aquarists. As with the Pro and Blue versions of the Radion G5, the freshwater version is blessed with its own subtle but very attractive green powder coated heatsink so you can immediately tell which kind of Radion you’re working with and while it may not contribute to the performance of the Radion G5 FW, it does earn style points for aquarists who want the an aquarium light with the best performance wand all the modern features we come to expect from Ecotech Marine.
