Reef Octopus has produced a new return pump called the VarioS 10. Like the smaller VarioS 2, 4, 6, and 8 it’s a DC circulation pump with a wired controller and variable speed, only it’s lept up in power with a maximum flow rate of 16,000lph/4220gph and is capable of pumping water nine meters (29’) high. With a maximum power draw of 200 watts, the controller has seen a redesign too with a more professional look to appeal to a commercial market and a digital display showing not just pump speed but also power consumption – something aquarists will be focusing on more and more in the future.
The pump is physically larger at 250x130x190mm/9.8×5.2×7.5” and comes with a 50mm/1 ½” inlet and a 40mm/1 ¼” outlet. It runs on 36V as opposed to 24V, can be run in wet or dry situations and a separate float switch will be available to cut the power when necessary. Like the smaller models, there is no app control but there is a 0-10 volt connection port for third-party controllers. A wet cage and pipe couplings will be provided.
This is the first launch we’ve seen from Octo in a while and by the looks of this new pump it should live up to our expectations of the company for providing quality, wholly own manufactured equipment. With all the hardware in place, this pump body and controller could also pave the way for a new Octo super-powered VarioS skimmer pump. Pricing has not yet been confirmed.
