Today Red Sea has released details on its latest aquarium launch, the Max Nano G2 XL. Like the Max Nano and Max Peninsula, the G2 XL is an All-in-One plug-and-play reef system, incorporating 50-watt app-controlled LED lighting, an ATO, a protein skimmer, a filter sock, a return pump, and chemical media. But the new G2 XL has a larger volume and two very special add-ons for those who want the ultimate in nano reef tank accessories.
Tech specs
Despite the G2 label, the Nano XL is the first Red Sea tank with 20”x20”x24” dimensions (50x50x60cm) giving it a working volume of 125 liters, or 33 gallons capacity. The tank is constructed from solid 10mm thick low iron glass and can sit on a redesigned G2 cabinet, available in either black or white. The inbuilt Sicce return pump produces 1550lph/ 409gph, so it circulates the tank volume up to 12 times per hour. With the addition of a heater (not included,) it really is plug-and-play, and Max Nano remains the most featured loaded and complete nano reef tank available on the market today.
The ATO
With decades of reefing experience (even nano reefing experience,) we know that every nano reef tank needs an auto top-off device. Stable salinity is fundamental to successful reefing, and if you have to resort to manual topping-off you will forget, you’ll add large quantities infrequently, instead of small quantities frequently, and your livestock, and your ecosystem will suffer. Out of the box, the Red Sea Max Nano G2 XL comes with a built-in gravity top-off device and a small reservoir to ensure small, but constant topping-off.
The reservoir is small, but at least it has one, (and a protein skimmer,) versus so many All-In-One tanks that just come with a return pump, yet are marketed as reef tanks.
The Max Nano G2 wouldn’t be worthy of the name however if it wasn’t Red Sea ReefATO+ compatible – one of the best ATOs on the market – with temperature monitoring, a leak sensor, high accuracy, and loads of safety features. So fit one of those, place a much larger reservoir in the cabinet beneath and you have a different proposition altogether. Now for the icing on the cake…
NanoMat roller filter for Red Sea Max Nano
They kept this one quiet but have had to let it slip with the launch of this new aquarium. Red Sea is to launch a nano-sized roller filter called NanoMat, which will fit into the Max Nano G2 XL (as an optional upgrade,) offering roller mat convenience to all its users. It won’t be app controllable, and we don’t know if it requires manual advancing, or has a sensor and a motor, but this is a huge step, we predicted it on record back in July 2022, and we cannot wait. NanoMat is due for launch in Summer 2024.
What we think
Red Sea broke the mold when they created the original Red Sea Max all those years ago, and since they launched the Reefer, dozens of rival brands have released tank, sump, and white cabinet combinations that look a lot like it. With an app-controllable LED light, a protein skimmer and an ATO included, Max Nano remains one of the most complete if not the most complete reef-ready nano aquariums that anyone could purchase off-the-shelf.
With the app-controlled ReefATO+ and the newly teased NanoMat available to further upgrade topping-off capability and mechanical filtration, the Max Nano G2 XL will remain leagues ahead in features and technical specifications, and it is one very grown-up, very capable, All-In-One Nano Tank indeed.
