Just when you thought Scolys couldn’t get any more collectible than they already are, this Red Bounce Scoly turns up for sale on Corals.com, courtesy of Live Corals Australia. Except for the Bubble Coral, Plerogyra sinuosa, which may inflate its vesicles in the daytime on the reef for predator protection, corallimorphs like Rhodactis mushrooms and Lobophylliids like this Homophyllia australis don’t bounce naturally in the wild, and this phenomenon is thought to be entirely man-made.
Live Corals confirmed this, telling us it happened over time in their facility, and that it occurs when they use their LED lights and water flow in a certain way. The pictured coral would be inviting enough with its dark red coloration and pattern, but with the addition of the bounce, it takes its appeal (and price,) to a whole new level.
Now that Live Corals Australia knows the bounce recipe we expect to see more Bounce characteristics produced in their scolys and even other LPS coral species too. This particular one is now in the US and can be purchased from Corals.com for $750.
