Marineland’s New Aquarium Marine Series “designed for reefs” O RLY?

9

The new Marine series aquariums from marineland are designed to allow you to pick different options from some of their newer products they have released this past year. To start, the aquarium itself is available in several models 150, 200, 250 and 300 gallon sizes. All of these feature “high-definition” starfire glass. Wait. You didn’t know about the HD factor of starfire glass? Us either. Their ad agency got a bit carried away. (We would like to know if the glass supports 1080i or 1080p HD?)

Moving along, their stand and canopy is another option which comes in “Monterey Deep” and “Pine Majesty Deep” which are different designs. In regards to light, you’ll have options of metal halides with T5′s with heavy internal ballasts included free of charge. The Metal halides only come in the 150 wattage variety so don’t plan on any light demanding corals on those deeper tanks kids.

Filtration is powered by their NO3 factory bio wheel sump systems that sits below the tank in the already mentioned stand. We wonder if Marineland knows that 70% of aquarists run some form of the berlin filtration system, our guess is no. Back in May of this year Marineland launched their newly designed protein skimmers which they suggest to plug into this system, naturally. We don’t have any pricing where these systems will start out at, but expect to pay a reasonable amount for the starfire glass aquariums which is the only thing this system has us excited about. Does this excite any of you? Let us know in comments.

These new Marineland tanks are great for just about any marine setup! Drs. Foster’s and Smith are selling several completely spec’ed out tank systems (minus the protein skimmer) for an all-in-one price with the shipping included so that is nice if you want to elimnate all of the equipment selection for your next tank purchase. I do however think that even with the “Pro” lighting upgrade the three 150 watts halides are not going to allow for a diverse coral selection with a 27″ tank height but you could always purchase the standard lighting system and buy your own more powerful lighting system seperately. They really should have put at least three 250 watts metal halides in this setup, that is the only bad thing that I can say about it the package deal others I am going to get the 300 gallon ASAP!

Purchased the Marineland 200 gallon setup with cherry stand. Still setting up system but am wondering if it will hold the weight. Stand is solid but not a lot of supports. One big minus as far as I am concerned is the under cabinet height. I have tried every skimmer rated for the tank size and none will fit under the stand. I am going to have to build another side stand to house the skimmer. I don’t think their designers put a lot of thought into this one.

The stand height is limited due to the 36″ width of the stands. Since many interior doorways are only 32-34″ wide if they made the stand tall you would not be able to get it into a house. Same thing with the height of the tank. A dimension somewhere has to be limited to accomodate doorways to have any hope of being a successful mass produced tank.

Maybe the manufacturer should have made the stand in two pieces that could be put together once inside the house. No room for a skimmer under the stand is a huge issue for most reef aquarium keepers.
