Reef Octopus Gen II (2009) gets a face lift, still popular

Even in this recession the reef octopus protein skimmer is a popular low cost option. However, recently the skimmer was redesigned to incorporate recent trends in the protein skimmer industry. The new skimmer has a newly designed “cone” transition towards the top of the bubble chamber which is touted as a way to increase skimmer efficiency. The skimmer also includes the now ever popular needlewheel design, that we are seeing across most skimmer designs as of late, this needlewheel is said to increase efficiency by 30% along with the addition of a new bubbleplate. Interestingly, the skimmer uses a wedge pipe for adjusting the in-skimmer water level. You twist it to either open or close the water output, causing the water in the skimmer to drop or rise in response. The pumps which came with the older models like for example the CA 2200 which drew 54 watts, has been replaced by the OTP-2000 that eats up only 38 watts. The model above (110) retails for around $185 and will handle a tank up to 125 gallons. Not to shabby. Not to shabby at all.

I wonder what is so hard about using a compression adapter to make the outlet pipe into a standpipe rather than a valve…

I have one. It’s awesome. Skims the hell out of my water.

Note to admin: the way the output is set up on the skimmer in the picture is incorrect. you guys may want to update with a correct picture.

Can someone please point out which part belongs to the “cone” bit? i’m confused.

Yes, that was my fault that the standpipe was assembled incorrectly.
The picture is actually one that I posted on RC as well as my local reef club DFWMAS. I didn’t realize my mistake in putting the output plumbing together until after I took the picture.
