So, about SeaChem’s Aquavitro Salinity Salt

It’s been so long since we talked about Seachem’s AquaVitro Salinty salt we thought we’d get around the campfire and talk about it again. The only problem with that is of course there isn’t anything to talk about. The salt hasn’t been released. We haven’t heard a peep from Seachem, well up until now. We’re told that it could be anywhere between 3-5 weeks and the salt should start magically appearing across fish stores in the United States. Don’t hold your breath.

It seem like a lot of companies are releasing info lately about products when they are so far away from a release date. I’m not sure if they do it on purpose to generate hype or interest. Aquatinics, ReefBrite, Seachem, DA, are all examples that I have followed recently. Some companies this works well for and others drag it out way too long. I think a lot of reefers are turned off by this and don’t take them seriously after a while….
Just my thoughts and nothing more.

I have been waiting on this salt for a long time. Pretty weak how long they have drawn this out for. I may switch to Brightwell’s if this isn’t out within the next month.

Yeah hype can generate buzz and anticipation however if your product doesn’t live up to the hype you can very easily lose customers after the fact (e.g. DA)

I spoke to Jim Rogers at Seachem, and the reason for the delay is not because of product issues, but packaging issues.

Perhaps I might help here. We had very much hoped to get salinity out in late summer/early fall. However, what I think everyone has failed to understand is that we are doing something that no other company has done in this industry or hobby – that is to produce a batch specific guaranteed analysis salt for reef aquaria. What that means is that every single batch is sent out for independent lab analysis and then that data is put on the label of the buckets for that batch. That’s completely new and unique. You will know exactly how the salt in each bucket measures up, not by Seachem, but through an independent registered lab. In that, we had to find specific labs that would be able to do solid work and in a very timely manner. That actually took quite a bit of the time – more than we expected. Getting the buckets completed was held off during that time to insure we could do what we were hoping which pushed our time line out that much further. The bucket printing alone took 6 – 8 weeks. So, while we had hoped to come out with the product more quickly we did not want to sacrifice what our efforts were in putting forward a quality product and at the same time we had to establish the logistics of production in a fashion that would be feasible long term. With all of that said, we have the buckets printed and in house now. We will be shipping salinity next week. We have in fact sent a few of the 1050 gallon size drums out already. So, look for salinity to be in your LFS very shortly.

“every single batch is sent out for independent lab analysis and then that data is put on the label of the buckets for that batch.”

Holy Crap! I knew you guys were testing the salts but even we failed to realize just how methodical Seachem was going to be with this salt. We appreciate the effort and look forward to seeing this salt in action.

People sometimes fail to see how customer oriented Seachem is. They are in “fancy buckets” BECAUSE….Seachem asked reefers what they wanted, and reefers aid “fancy buckets”. Not boxes, not bags, not burlaps sacks.

The indivudal lot testing, with “individualized” analysis- can you fathom much this controls quality? Proabbly THE biggest issue with the other mass produced consumer salts is that there is always argument regarding that the “alk is low”, “calcium is off”, etc. Here, the analysis will be done professionally and properly, so, if mixed as directed, you WILL know what you have.

The fact that Seachem has taken these steps for teh consumers is jawdropping.

I won one of these at MACNA and got an e-mail on Friday, January 15th to say that they are shipping it and I should watch for its arrival. I’ll mix some up and let you know the dilly, yo.

I received a bucket of this salt. Holy density, Batman! This thing is ridiculously heavy! The particle size is very fine – far more like powder and less like the granular salts typical of other brands. The side of the bucket says that it makes 225 gallons and I believe it. I mixed up a 100 gallon Rubbermaid tank with this salt and I’m less than 1/2 way through the bucket. Absolutely no precipitates and levels are great – no adjustments before doing a water change. Kind of pricy but looks like awesome stuff.
