SMR1, the specialized biopellet reactor from NextReef goes up for pre-order

By on Apr 23, 2010

The SMR1 is a new media reactor from NextReef which was specially designed to turn over the solid carbon dosing biopellets. We first caught wind of this specialized SMR1 from NextReef back in January and now that it is getting closer to availability, we can finally see what features will make the SMR1 better at turning over biopellets than your run of the mill media reactor. First of all, the SMR1 has a hang-on-the-back lid assembly which will allow it to hang on your tank or sump. Next, the smoked blue acrylic will reduce light penetration allowing the bacteria to grow more prolifically without any light inhibition. Finally, the SMR1 will be able to hold up to one liter of biopellets in a fluidized state. The SMR1 is now available for preorder for $99 from Aquarium Specialty.

So the reasons it’s better for biopellets than other reactors is because it’s smoked blue? yikes =X

Just a few more details, direct from the source:

The SMR1 is a direct variant of our regular MR1 reactors, with a few key changes:

1 – Cast blue tubing – ultra clear, and cuts down on light penetration to reduce unwanted algae accumulation.

2 – Revised plenum design. The standard plenums are were replaced with a micro-hole design to keep BioPellets and other solid media in place, without the need for sponges.

3 – Larger-diameter fittings to accommodate higher flow rates at a reduced head pressure.

Overall, it’s designed to run in high-light (say, near a lighted sump) locations for extended periods of time with a reduced need for maintenance.
