Marineland to stop selling some Stealth Pro Heaters, investigate quality issues

28

Marineland says it is investigating the potential quality issue with certain versions of the Stealth Pro heater line as well as the previously discontinued Stealth Heater line. Marineland has decided to indefinitely cease shipping certain models of the Stealth Pro Heater line. Specifically the affected models are 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 watt versions of the Stealth Pro heater line.

Marineland has not publicly stated what the issue is to cause this “voluntary suspension of sale”. Retailers have been told to “stop the sale of any of the ‘affected products’ listed below and remove those products from your retail shelves.” If you are using any of these products you should stop using them immediately. Has any of our readers experienced issues with the affected models? Full letter from MarineLand’s mother company United Pet Group below.

There it is. After reading a few threads about these heaters, I pulled one out of my display. I have been using it only in my SW mix drum, but now I will be throwing it out entirely.

Thanks RB for bringing us the official word.

I know this is an “internal” memo, but man I love how the recommended replacement is another heater made by the same company.

I’ve been reading on various sites about how Petsmart is giving refunds for these, but don’t seem to see any word of that coming directly from Marineland. That’s ok… one of these blows up in my face I’ll happily sue them for many times over what the heaters are worth.

So are they going to give me a refund for the heater they want me to cease to use? Are they going to send me a new Visi-Therm heater to replace their defective unit?

Are you going to continue to cry or are you going to call them and see what to do about it?

I actually called them up right after i made the above comment and the lady said they are not currently recalling them but she took down my information so that if they do recall them i will be notified.

I’ve had several of these heaters explode while in use, even under water. Generally they pop open while left running out of water, even for a short period of time (less than 30 seconds). The models that I’ve experienced this in are the 250w.

I Work a Retail store in Florida, and I’ve been called out several times, the problem with these is they they rupture inside the aquarium usually electrifying the water, or popping a breaker, slowly killing fish from suffocation and pollution…
this in my experience was in marine tanks only..

p.s. – this problem has so far been unique to the “stealth pro”
all heaters have there inherit risks, but stealth pro took the cake on this one…

These heaters can and do go BOOM! I saw the effects of one such incident at a public aquarium. It is no joke. It blew out the side of the refugium. I have a 100w one and it is now being used to keep my chicken water from freezing…if it blows up there it will simply trip the GFCI or breaker.

I don’t know who all got this letter, but once again just as in the Canister filter disaster, we, the retailer had to find this out via this website. I really wish Marineland would have a better line of communication so that the retailer would find this out from them first, rather than from a website geared towards the consumer.
Marineland, if you want the support of the Retailer, how about you talk to us, and let us know of these things.

I bought one of the 150w pros last year. It lasted less than 3 weeks before it blew out its side. I just (luckily) happened to be there at the time and heard it pop and sizzle, then the smell! I tossed it and bought an Ebo.

Ive have used one since July, no problems so far. I think mine is a 50w though im not sure. Was this problem affecting some of the smaller Stealth Pro units, or just the 100w and up?

Since Stealth heaters are all I’ve ever used on my tanks (7 years in the hobby) and I just bought 4 new ones to replace the older models (all over 100W) this bit of news is a bit disconcerting. So while the company could not offer a reason as to what the issue might be in these heaters, I will be getting glass heater replacements and return the ones I have. In the past I’ve only had to replace two of the heaters due to shock issues, and luckily both times it was in the SW mixing tank, both were 75W.

    Just 100W and higher.

There were issues with all of the heaters, not just the “Pro” Models.

Glad they are finally taking care of this… it’s about damn time.

Not true… my 50W started expanding and exposing chemicals.

I just got off the phone with them and they are replacing all of mine with the Visi-Therm heaters at no cost. Very nice people to deal with. :)

I have never had a problem but sure don’t want to risk a disaster. Dr. F&S is replacing my stealth prow 250 and stealth 150.

I had one of the previous models of Stealth Pro heater ignite inside my 120 gallon tank… about a year ago, it caused immediate electrocution and death of one fish. I discovered the accident by smelling burning plastic. After many water changes and lots of carbon use, I had only suffered the one loss. After contacting Marineland, they paid for the replacement of the fish, sent me a bucket of free salt and replaced the carbon I used to get rid of the plastic smell/ toxins. They also sent me two new Stealth Pro heaters to replace the previous ones. Good customer service, but not so great heaters, apparently. Has anyone had problems with their Visitherm heaters? I haven’t heard of any issues with these…. I’m wondering if they will send me replacement Visitherm heaters for the recalled ones they gave me before.
