It’s been a few months since the craziness of InterZoo 2026 this past May 11-14! Out of all the incredible innovations we saw on the show floor, one product completely stopped me in my tracks—a brand-new light coming to the aquarium industry called “GRAVITY.” I released our interview on the RB youtube channel just after the show and now that the chaos of Summer is winding down I thought it would be nice to release an informative article and have a follow up live chat today so you can join with any questions you may have since we were first to announce the new light.
Manufactured by Stefan Imke of B-SPX out of Germany, this fixture isn’t just another panel; it is a profound leap forward for reef illumination. Stefan has been professionally making lighting for some of the largest companies in our industry for over 20 years. Now, under B-SPX, he is bringing a long-awaited passion project to life.
The Origin: Jake Adams and the “MOALed”
The story behind this light hits particularly close to home for us at ReefBuilders. Back in 2017, right there at InterZoo, Stefan and our original founder, Jake Adams, shared an incredible conversation. They dreamed together about what a lighting company could build if they truly pushed all the boundaries. When Jake looked at Stefan’s very first prototype, he told him that if he brought it to market, it would be the “MOALed”—the Mother of All LEDs.
Nine years later, Stefan dropped everything else to finish the engineering and finally show the very first run of this light to the world. While Stefan playfully declined to name it the MOALed, opting instead for “GRAVITY,” the passionate spirit of that legendary 2017 conversation lives on in every feature.
Light-Scaping: Your App is in Charge
Perhaps the most mind-blowing aspect of GRAVITY is its dedicated “Light-scaping” web app. Stefan realized that hobbyists shouldn’t have to guess how many modules they need or what settings will keep their corals thriving.
Smart Mapping: You can take a photo of your aquarium and upload it directly into the app.
Coral Identification: You label the specific corals in your tank directly within the app.
Custom Recommendations: The app analyzes the lighting requirements for those specific corals and calculates your layout, even providing a stunning 3D cloud rendering.
Guided Placement: It instructs you exactly on what levels are best to place your corals for optimal health and PAR.
Unmatched Hardware and Flexibility
GRAVITY gets its name because its unique mounting hardware is essentially held together by gravity, allowing for a shaky but highly adaptable flexibility. Stefan emphasizes that the sun doesn’t just blast top-down all day; it provides crucial cross-illumination. GRAVITY allows you to mimic this by placing and angling the LED panels to light your reef from the sides, ensuring your water is flooded with photons and reducing the dark zones caused by self-shading.
Tool-Free Adjustments: You can move the light forward and backward or adjust its rotation without needing any tools or screws.
Sleek Profile: The fixture is astonishingly thin, measuring just 11 millimeters (less than half an inch) thick.
Modular Sizing: The panels are available in multiple sizes to fit your needs, including a 2-cluster (30W), 4-cluster (60W), 6-cluster (90W), 8-cluster (120W) and 12-cluster (180W) setup.
Energy Efficient: It uses a brilliant mix of 120-degree mid-power LEDs and 60-degree high-power LEDs equipped with American-made silicone lenses, saving up to 50% energy compared to classic wide-output lights.
Snap-on Glare Shield: A dedicated anti-glare shield pops on and off instantly to protect your eyes while relaxing on the sofa, designed to provide comfort with zero negative optical effects on the tank itself.
A Waterproof, Fanless Powerhouse
For hobbyists saving up their hard-earned money for top-tier gear, accidental drops into the tank are a nightmare scenario. Stefan engineered GRAVITY to be incredibly resilient to the harsh realities of our hobby:
IP69 Waterproofing: If the light falls into your water, it is completely waterproof—Stefan even notes the unit is pressure-cleaner safe!
Vacuum Sealed: The light is manufactured in a vacuum with full optical glass lamination, ensuring zero oxygen degrades the internal LED phosphor over time.
No Cooling Fans: You won’t hear any noisy cooling fins or fans.
Convection Cooled: The unit relies purely on natural convection cooling through its sleek, anodized aluminum body.
Dynamic Power and Spectrum
The B-SPX Ocean GRAVITY series features five distinct channels to bring out the most vibrant, natural fluorescence in your reef:
Channel 1 (White): 6800K full spectrum white boasting a Color Rendering Index (CRI) above 97 for breathtaking color clarity.
Channel 2 (Royal Blue): Spanning a beautiful 435 to 475 nm range.
Channel 3 (Actinic): Starting at 405 nm up to 445 nm, specifically tailored to avoid stressing the corals.
Channel 4 (Pink): A brilliant, specialized blend of Cyan and Orange since red light disappears too quickly in deep water.
Channel 5 (Cyan): A pure Cyan booster channel that raises brightness and feeds perfectly into the necessary spectrum.
Furthermore, the light features a Dynamic Power Control known as “DPC” mode. When you dim down certain channels (like turning the white channel down for the evening), the light can safely reroute that unused, free energy to boost your active channels—making your blues pop even more while staying completely safe for the hardware!
Final Thoughts & Learn More
Seeing GRAVITY in person, it is very clear that this might just be the coolest thing at InterZoo this year. The passion behind Stefan’s work is entirely genuine, and we know Jake would have been completely thrilled to see his MOALed concept become a reality.
Stefan has shared with that the demand for the “Gravity” has been amazing so he has opened up preorders on his website. For more information, updates, and to check out all the details on this revolutionary fixture, be sure to head directly over to the company’s website at www.b-spx.com.
If you haven’t already, don’t forget to check out our accompanying ReefBuilders YouTube video for our full chat with Stefan from the show floor. More importantly, be sure to tune in TODAY at 5:00 PM CST for our special “Reef Builders ” live stream on ReefBuilders YouTube and Facebook. Stefan will be joining us live to answer any and all questions you might have after watching the video or reading this article. See you there!
