It seems like it was just the other day when the fish breeding wizards at QM Labs announced the coveted Gem Tang and the homely Black Longnose Tang. The year isn’t over yet and they’ve dropped another aquaculture win: the Peackeeper Maroon Clownfish.
If you’ve ever had Maroon Clownfish or encountered them diving, then you know how aggressively mean they are. Rumour has it that the Peacekeepers are the friendlier version, but I’ll wait before sticking my arm in the water with them. At least aquacultured fish from QM are already eating prepared feeds like their Nutramar food, so getting them acclimated won’t take a delicate touch!

LOS ANGELES — March 24, 2025 — Quality Marine is proud to announce the availability of QM Labs aquacultured Peacekeeper Maroon Clowns (Premnas biaculeatus)! These fish have been aquacultured in-house from both wild and aquacultured broodstock. This is the first release of these fish from QM Labs, so quantities in this initial batch are limited, but fear not, more are coming! Only medium specimens are available for sale at this time, and due to the unique markings and patterns of each individual offspring fish, they will be offered initially in the What You See Is Want You Get (WYSIWYG) section, on Quality Marine’s retailer online ordering system.

The young are reared on rotifers, newly hatched artemia, gut loaded artemia, then transitioned onto our Nutramar Marine Complete pellets diet in our QM Labs facility. The sheer size difference between Premnas and other clownfish, along with their brooding maroon coloration, makes them a showpiece fish even before you add the jaw-dropping “Peacekeeper” patterning. As an aside, the Peacekeeper name came about when it was hypothesized that these Maroon Clowns might be more peaceful than their wild-harvested counterparts. That is not yet the case, though we will see what the future holds with regard to changes over generations of captive breeding.

Today, our retail and public aquarium partners can choose from more than 63 new species and varieties aquacultured by our scientists. We offer many of the industry’s best-sellers, such as Storm, Longfin, and Snowflake Clowns, and continue to break new ground with species previously unattainable as aquacultured specimens, such as our Purple Tangs, Black Tangs, and Gem Tangs. This allows us to offer our customers a regular, reliable source for stock that they actually need, that has spent its entire existence under our direct supervision.

We go to great lengths to ensure our aquacultured offerings are reared in a sterile, state-of-the-art facility, tightly controlling their exposure to anything and everything, including all of the different foods we rear here to feed these fish from their earliest larval stages. If you are interested in having one of the first domestically aquacultured Peacekeeper Clowns in your own aquarium, get to your local fish store immediately and tell them you want a QM Labs Peacekeeper Clown today!
